Dāl, called dāl,
NA
I muhmala, is the eighth letter in the Arabic, the tenth in the Persian, and the eleventh in the Hindūstānī alphabets : its sound is much softer and more dental than that of our d : in reckoning by abjad it stands for four : in Persian it is sometimes permuted into t, as bat-tar for bad-tar, worse ; in the classic period of the Persian language dāl seems to have been pronounced ẕāl, whenever a vowel preceded, as gumbaẕ, a dome, for gumbad ; ustāẕ, a preceptor, for ustād ; and in good Persian MSS. written four hundred years ago or upwards the dāl, thus permuted, is generally marked with a dot, ẕāl. the letter dāl (denoting dāda, “granted”) used formerly to be affixed to zamīndārī and other grants by the head native revenue officer under the British government in Bengal. a. p.
