usually named sīni muhmala or sīni ghair manḳūṭa, the twelfth letter in the Arabic, the fifteenth in the Persian, and eighteenth in the Hindūstānī alphabets : its sound is that of the English, s, or of the Sanskrit sa : in reckoning by abjad its value is sixty : in almonacks it represents the sun, and a sextile aspect of the planets. it is also used as an abbreviation for the word salām, salutation. a. p. h.
