ع

NA
Ain,
NA
called ‘aini muhmala or ‘aini ghair manḳūṭa, the eighteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-first Persian, and twenty-fourth Hindūstānī. This letter is peculiarly Arabic or Semitic, and has no analogous sound in Sanskrit. It is of the class of guttural letters, being formed in the lower part of the throat, by a compression of the fauces stronger and deeper than that used in the formation of the hamza, or initial alif. Its sound has been compared by Meninski to the voice of a calf calling its mother, which is a pure absurdity. in reckoning by abjad it stands for 70. in Persian words introduced into Arabic it is sometimes substituted for alif, as la’l for lāl. on the other hand the ‘ain of Arabic words introduced into Hindūstānī is, by the common people, sounded like alif.
