the twenty-first letter of the Arabic alphabet, the twenty-fourth Persian, and twenty-seventh Hindūstānī : its sound is harder than that of kāf (the following letter), being. Formed deep in the throat, by the preseure of the root of the tongue against it, and has been compared to the cawing of a raven : in reckoning by abjad it stands for one hundred. “the people of Southern India generally sound this letter erroneously like kh ; the Persians confound it with gh, sounding either letter as ḳ or gh indiscriminately.”-(Binning). a.
